Custom Wheels

What are custom wheels?

Custom Wheels are any wheels that do not come equipped on a vehicle from the manufacturer.  This includes replicas of factory wheels in larger sizes to wild and unique styles.  Custom wheels can give you that unique look to separate your vehicle from the hundreds of others that all look alike.  Many times aftermarket wheels are the first, and sometimes only aftermarket upgrade many people make to their cars.  Please use our vehicle search above to see which rims we have for your car.  You can also look at our gallery to see examples of wheels custom on your car.  We carry many of the most popular brands like Lexani Wheels, Fuel Wheels, and Vossen Wheels.

Do I need hub rings on custom wheels?

OEM wheels have a centerbore that is a perfect match for the hub size of the vehicle it is included with.  Hub rings are very common to use on custom wheels because most aftermarket wheels are made to fit multiple vehicles.  Since almost every make of vehicle has a different hub size, manufacturers often use a common centerbore size, and use hub rings to reduce the centerbore to a perfect match for the vehicle.

Although most aftermarket wheels are made to fit multiple vehicles, some manufacturers target specific makes such as BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Porsche.  Those manufacturers will usually build the wheel to be hub-centric meaning that its a perfect fit for the vehicle hub much like the OEM wheel.

For any vehicle that uses lug bolts as opposed to lug nuts (ex. BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche, etc), it is absolutely necessary that the wheel be hub centric, or that you use hub rings to make the wheel hub centric.  On vehicles that use lug nuts (ex. Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, Toyota, etc) hub rings can help to make the installation easier by centering wheels, and eliminate chances of vibration, but they are not required.

How will oversized custom wheels affect my ride?

When using aftermarket wheels on your vehicle, one important factor is to try to keep the outer diameter of the tire is close to the factory tire diameter as possible.  This will maintain the correct speedometer and odometer readings in the vehicle.  With that said, when you go up an inch in wheel diameter (ex. 18 in. to 19 in.) you can expect the sidewall height of your tire to be reduced by 1/2 inch giving you a 1 inch larger opening for the wheel.  When your sidewall height is reduced, it is natural that the tire will not absorb as much of the imperfections and bumps in the road.  As a result, you will feel more of the road than you did with your smaller wheels.  As you can imagine, the more oversized you get on your wheel choice, the more of the road you will feel.  Usually going up 1 or 2 inches won't make a significant change in the comfort of the vehicle, but when you start getting into 30 series tires on cars, and 25 series tires on SUV's and trucks, the ride will be noticeably different.

Will stock lug bolts or lug nuts fit aftermarket wheels?

Most custom made wheels will required aftermarket lug bolt or lug nuts unless they are OEM replica wheels.  Most vehicle's OEM hardware are not suitable for aftermarket wheels because they do not seat correctly, or because the diameter of the lug is too large.  Many OEM lug nuts are "Mag" style lugs which include a washer which is not small enough to fit in the hole on custom wheels.  Many OEM lug bolts are ball seat, whereas almost every aftermarket wheel on the market requires cone seat.  If you have any questions about the correct installation hardware to use, or would like to purchase the correct lug nuts or lug bolts for your custom wheels, feel free to call us at 800-242-9883, or visit our accessories section.
